Botswana welcomes Lotus
LOTUS DEVELOPMENT SA
PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY PR CONNECTIONS
[ 11 July 2000 ] - Lotus Development has reinforced its commitment to Africa and its emerging IT community with the establishment of an official office in Gaborone, Botswana.

According to Fritz Fleischmann, vice president and general manager, Lotus EMEA, Botswana's need for communication and collaboration is vital at this stage of the country's IT development.

"Communication is the major enabling factor to progress, and for this reason we believe that Lotus, with its stable of collaborative messaging products is able to make a significant contribution to the development of Botswana's IT arena," says Fleischmann.

Due to the implementation of Lotus products by various enterprises within Botswana, Fleischmann believes the presence of a dedicated Lotus team is imperative. He says: "From the Gaborone office we will be able to better service our existing clients as well as make significant contributions to the Botswana economy with both our expertise and local investment. It is also a convenient springboard to the rest of Africa."

In terms of vision, commitment and continued investment, the Botswana government has displayed the qualities needed to succeed, highlights Fleischmann. This is especially evident with the Vision 2016 project that is to coincide with Botswana's 50th anniversary of independence.

Vision 2016 is a general upliftment project that has IT development and use as one of its main pillars. Technology will be used to further enhance an informed and educated nation, with its first objective being the enabling of computer-based education in local schools.

Botswana has added investment to its short and long term IT objectives, which Fleischmann finds encouraging. "This country has taken its gift of natural resources and invested in the future of the entire nation, something not often seen in the African continent."

"Botswana has shown exceptional potential in terms of technological development and general uplifment," elaborates Fleischmann. "It is Lotus' aim to provide enabling technologies that will allow not only for the enhancing of the IT revolution in Botswana, but also for sustained economic growth."
