Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard have moved the SOS Children's Village in Mamelodi, Pretoria, into the digital age with a state of the art computer centre, increasing the community's computer literacy and employment opportunities.
This is the fifth such digital village in SA within SOS Children's Villages, a global organisation that provides homes for 45 000 orphaned or abandoned children. HP provided the hardware necessary for the centre and Microsoft the software.
“There are three things SA needs,” says Franz Lube, MD of Hewlett-Packard South Africa. “Education, education, and education.”
“We are part of a digital world, but the greatest challenge is to equip the children of tomorrow, our future, with the skills necessary to empower themselves by bridging the information divide, because knowledge is power. This initiative is about giving access to that information with our partner Microsoft.”
“It is a maxim at Microsoft, that if you give people great tools then they'll do great things,” says Terry Annecke, marketing manager for Microsoft SA. “We have given these children access to today's technologies and software.”
