Conference explores ICT business drivers for 2005
BY FAY HUMPHRIES, MANAGING EDITOR: FEATURES AND INDUSTRY PORTALS
[Johannesburg, 8 February 2005] - Business drivers and how ICT spend should be channeled to support these at private and public companies will be in focus at the upcoming IT Confidence 2005 Conference.

Business Connexion CEO Peter Watt will deliver the keynote address at the event, which is being hosted by ITWeb and Brainier Capital and Consulting at Gallagher Estate in Midrand on Wednesday, 23 February.

Watt will discuss the SA IT sector's local and global challenges and opportunities, benchmarking the country's progress in this industry against that of other developing economies.

Chris Hart, senior treasury economist at ABSA, will identify advantages companies should leverage in a transforming SA economy.

Mark Walker, a director at BMI-TechKnowledge, will cover SA's IT spending outlook for 2005.

“From a corporate perspective, more expansionary spending is taking place as big business looks to new markets and to maximising its current customer base. The focus is on technologies that support new products and services, and increased productivity,” says Walker.

Another area of significant ICT spend is being driven by the need for compliance, with security and storage requirements receiving attention here, he says. Walker's presentation will identify business issues driving growth in SA and link these to possible technology solutions.

Gordon Frazer, MD of Microsoft SA, will speak on how to build a strong knowledge economy as the IT industry continues to drive economic growth and becomes an increasingly large employer.

Brett Dawson, group CEO of DiData SA, will deliver an analysis of the impact of deregulation in the local ICT sector, and the opportunities this will create.

A public sector perspective will be given by Mavuso Msimang, CEO at SITA, in his coverage of government's ICT spending priorities and the resultant business opportunities for local suppliers.

Other speakers include Franca Di Silvestro, a director at HSBC, Stuart Pennington, CEO of SA: The Good News, and Brian Rainier, MD of Brainier Capital & Consulting.
