In a recent PC attack, a two-year-old computer was brutally shot repeatedly until it was a mangled mess, in what psychologists are calling an ever-increasing wave of PC rage sweeping the country.
This incident came to light in a current online survey mapping the PC rage phenomenon, when a South African respondent reported that he had witnessed a colleague shoot his computer “to smithereens” out of sheer frustration.
The survey, run by Symantec in conjunction with ITWeb, allows people to discover their own level of PC rage, as well as find out how they fit into the national demographic. Also available on the site at www.pcrage.co.za are the results of comparative studies conducted in the UK and Australia.
South Africans and Australians react in the same way to PC problems, according to the initial results, by getting angry and swearing at the machine. The PC shooting incident was the most extreme reaction recorded.
These preliminary findings suggest that most South Africans experience PC problems at some time, and that half of them experienced loss of productivity and time as a result. Some 44% said they knew what the problem was some of the time, while only a third knew how to get the PC up and running again. This is in contrast to the Australian results, where 56% said they knew the cause and 53% knew how to fix the problem.
SA tolerance of computer problems was less (over half believed they were avoidable), while more than half of the Australians surveyed thought the problems were unavoidable (55%).
