City of Munich selects Novell Open Enterprise Server
ISSUED BY: EMERGING MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS
[Johannesburg, 13 May 2005] - The city of Munich, a long-time Novell customer, has decided to use Novell Open Enterprise Server and will migrate many of the existing NetWare servers to Open Enterprise Server within the next few months.

Open Enterprise Server combines the advantages of NetWare with those of Linux and enables the use of mixed NetWare and Linux servers on a joint administration platform. The decision continues a long working relationship with Novell.

"Munich welcomes Novell's decision to move towards Linux-based servers and services," said a spokesperson from the City of Munich. "The ongoing LiMux project is confined to the migration of 14 000 desktops from Windows to Linux; but as NetWare servers needed to be updated anyway, the decision to use Open Enterprise Server was a logical step as it enables us to combine the existing systems with the new Linux-based environment. Novell's expertise makes them a strong partner in this area and allows us to elegantly combine the old world with the new. "

Volker Smid, Area General Manager Central Europe at Novell, said: "The decision of the city of Munich shows that Open Enterprise Server is a strong solution for public sector environments. The product enables them to use the proven network services on the Linux kernel while its flexible nature facilitates deployment of a platform mix that best meets their needs."

With Open Enterprise Server, the city of Munich gets a secure and reliable suite of services that combines NetWare and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server to deliver proven file, print, directory, management, collaboration and application services. As a result, customers benefit from leading commercial and open source networking platforms along with integrated management tools, identity-based services and Novell's global support ecosystem to meet enterprise-class computing needs.

Novell Open Enterprise Server includes:

* A suite of core networking services, including directory, identity management, file, print and provisioning services aimed at user productivity that can be deployed on either NetWare or Linux.

* Uniform, integrated management tools via Novell iManager that make it easy for IT staff to install, configure, support, monitor and manage their network infrastructure, regardless of the mix of NetWare or Linux servers.

* Novell Storage Services to support large-scale, distributed rich file access with the highest security and access-control flexibility of any shared file system.

* Novell Cluster Services for enhanced scalability and failover with the simplest management in its class. Novell Cluster Services also provides a foundation for business continuity services. Customers can create a clustered mix of NetWare and Linux servers with complete interoperability and service failover between these platforms.

* Two operating systems with complete code set for NetWare and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server.
