Modding craze hits SA
BY DEJAN JOVANOVIC, ITWEB TRAINEE JOURNALIST
[Johannesburg, 1 September 2005] - ITWeb is teaming up with Naked IT and Arena 77 to host a national online competition for PC modification and over-clocking.

The competition, titled “Pimp my Box”, runs from 1 September to 31 October and includes prizes for the best modified PC, best performance PC (over-clocking), best creative PC and the worst modified PC.

Pimp my Box will give away more than R10 000 worth of prizes from sponsors including Asus, Shuttle, Viewsonic, Elsa, Geil, Silverstone and Akasa.

Entrants must supply photos of their efforts, with one photograph showing the Internet competition page on the monitor for validation purposes.

For the over-clocking hopefuls, besides the photos of the PC's interior and exterior, competitors need to supply screenshots of programs such as CPU-Z (to show CPU and memory speed) and 3D Mark 2005 (to show the PC's overall performance).

“PC modding is so huge right now around the world, and it's like a culture. It is divided into two groups – you have those who mod with off-the-shelf products, and those who create everything from scratch,” says Jack Chan, founder of Naked IT.

The entrants' mods will be judged on appearance, functionality (such as the cooling of the PC), structure (the PC must be well-organised and clean) and creativity.

Judges will evaluate all contestants until they reach a shortlist of 10 in each category. These finalists will be voted for online during the last two weeks of the competition. Public votes will count for 20% and the judges' decision for 80% of the overall result.
