ProScan Systems, a leader in barcode, data automation, RFID, wireless networking and mobile technologies, recently introduced a multi-protocol RFID version of its Intermec PM4i smart printer.
The PM4i makes it possible for companies implementing many versions of RFID (radio frequency identification) including EPCglobal Class 0 or Class 1, ISO, and upgradable to EPCglobal Generation 2, to have a single printing and RFID encoding platform. The multi-protocol RFID PM4i printer integrates into manufacturing, warehouse and logistics applications, ensuring all items are RFID-labelled and tracked for quick and accurate data collection throughout a supply chain. According to Andrew Fosbrook, Managing Director of ProScan, sole distributor for Intermec in SA: "This is the first printer capable of multiple RFID protocol operations, allowing flexible and adaptable RFID smart label printing. It allows companies to meet current RFID compliance labelling standards, while at the same time providing the ability to tap into the full business benefits of global supply chain RFID. The PM4i simultaneously encodes and prints smart labels that can be used worldwide, allowing an RFID tag to be read via multiple frequencies, depending on regional standards." The Intermec Smart Printer applications that operate in the PM4i printer turn the PM4i into a "smart client" capable of executing user-defined programmes that leave the host applications unmodified, allowing rapid pilot implementations at lower cost and lower risk to ongoing operations. The RFID PM4i also supports stand-alone printer applications, eliminating the need for the personal computer normally required to drive a printer. It operates additional hardware, such as scanners, other printers and conveyors; it can access information from the network host and offers the ability to change with future demands, for additional investment protection. Flexible interface options facilitate integration and placement of the PM4i RFID printers in both wired and wireless environments. Integrated EasyLANT Ethernet, USB and serial ports are standard interfaces. Users also have the option to add EasyLAN Wireless and/or industrial interface boards, making it possible to use up to seven interface ports simultaneously. Intermec's wired and wireless technology ensures secure printing and network infrastructure for all environments. The EasyLAN Wireless interface uses an integrated standard 802.11b WiFi radio, providing the latest wireless security to protect information relayed through the network.
