Artist: Josie Field
Album: Mercury
Label: RPM CDRPM 1940 (TN)

“Every Now & Then”, the first single from Josie Field's debut CD, Mercury, has been getting quite a bit of airplay on local radio.

It's the closest the Johannesburg singer-songwriter gets to pop, which has led to her being described as a pop artist more than once. But Mercury is not a pop album, even though it is being marketed as such. It's a much more serious album about love won and lost, with a strong folk influence, kind of a Joni Mitchell meets Alanis Morissette.

Listening to the album, one wouldn't think that Field is only 22. Her voice is far more mature than her years would indicate. More important, so is her writing, with her songs aimed squarely at the adult market.

The producer is Kevin Leicher, who has been around for a while, having played with several local acts like Henry Ate, Diesel Whores and Piet Botha. Leicher now owns Darkstar Studios, where Field recorded her album between October last year and June this year.

While Field is very much an acoustic artist, Leicher added other layers to the songs, including electronics as well as other instruments. On the whole, it works well.

“Every Now & Then” is an enjoyable song, but its shortcoming is that it doesn't allow Field to display her full vocal range. Her voice is rich, managing to sound reasonably deep and full even when singing higher notes, as in “Yes I Take That Very Personally”.

“I Laughed and Cocked My Head to One Side” is another highlight. It's the purest song on the album, with just guitar and vocals. While Leicher's touch works, Field doesn't exactly need the drums and other instruments to carry her performance. She can hold her own quite ably without them and it's great to hear her so clearly on this track.

“White Girl” is another fantastic song, musically and lyrically, with a good blend between acoustic and electronic sounds, a nice rhythm and a good vocal performance making for a superb ending to the disc.

According to Field's Web site, she is performing at The 88 Lounge in Norwood on 2 August and at Back 2 Basix in Westdene on 11 August. She's worth hearing.
